Ever wondered how your favorite abstract artist actually created that painting?

You sit down with a blank canvas, a fresh cup of coffee, and a hope that maybe today’s the day something good happens.
You open Instagram for a little “inspiration” (let’s be honest—it’s more of a ritual than a strategy at this point)... and there it is:
A stunning, layered, mysterious piece of abstract art. It stops you mid-scroll. You zoom in. You save it. You stare.

And your brain starts spiralling:
🎨 "How did she make that?"
Is that done with a brush or palette knife? Fluid acrylics? Gesso sorcery? Is there sand in there?!
💸 "This looks... expensive."
7 failed canvases, 4 art supply hauls, and a mild identity crisis later... Maybe I could make something similar. Or maybe I just buy more brushes and call it a day.
😩 "I wouldn’t even know where to begin."
Am I supposed to feel something first? Or just start and see what happens?
✨ "Everyone says, 'follow your intuition'—but mine’s not returning my texts."
Do I meditate? Stare at the wall? Scroll for inspo until my battery dies?
🙈 "I love the layers."
Meanwhile, I get mud. Always mud.
🤔 "Where does she even get these ideas?"
Because my brain goes totally blank the second I sit down to paint. Canvas: 1. Me: 0.
THAT FRUSTRATION?
IT'S EXACTLY WHY WE CREATED ARIE
We’re artists too—and we’ve asked all of those questions.
The overthinking, the second-guessing, the feeling of staring at a beautiful abstract painting and thinking, “Okay, but … how did they actually make that?”
We weren’t looking for vague advice like “just trust your intuition” or “experiment with color.” We wanted to watch the process unfold—start to finish.
The first mark, the awkward middle, the turning point, the final details. We wanted to see:
How artists actually use their materials
When they make decisions—and when they just follow the feeling
How they fix pieces that feel “ruined”
What it looks like to move through self-doubt and keep going
And when we couldn’t find that? We decided to build it ourselves. That’s how ARIE was born.

80,000 people have learned to paint with ARIE

THE ARIE FAQS. THE ONLY THING WE LEAVE HANGING IS THE ART
Absolutely! We get it – circumstances change. You can cancel your monthly subscription at any time. (Of course, we’d be sad to see you go – but you can always re-join in the future).
Absolutely! We believe that connecting with other like-minded artists is key to a fulfilling creative journey, so you’ll have the opportunity to meet other inspirational members in our private Facebook community. Ask for feedback, see how others are applying the lessons to their work, and make new friends who get as excited about layering techniques as you do.
Currently there’s over 70 classes available inside the membership, plus you get access to new content every month.
You can access your ARIE membership by logging into our dedicated studio portal. You can log in whenever you like, as often as you like.
You’ll need the internet to be able to access the studio portal, yes.
All classes are delivered digitally, and are in video format.
This is entirely up to you! We know that life is busy, so we’ve made sure our lessons are bitesize, and easy to fit into a demanding schedule. Whether you have five minutes to spare or an entire weekend to get lost in a canvas – ARIE has something to get your creative juices flowing.
Both! ARIE is an evolving, creative playground, where you can learn exciting new techniques…and be continuously inspired by our world-renowned artists. Whether you’re brand new to abstract art, or an established artist – you’ll find something to add to your self-expression toolbox (and be able to adapt it to the level you’re at).
The awesome thing about abstract art is that there is no prescribed list of supplies that you HAVE to have. As you continue to make art, you’ll learn which supplies speak to you – and which you can live without. As a minimum, you’ll need something to paint on – and something to paint with. A good starting place is some pre-stretched canvases to paint on, acrylic paint in a few basic colours, and a few good brushes to paint with. You can also use many household items as creative tools – you really can make the most of what you already have lying around your home.
The truth is EVERYONE experiences this. Despite what you might see on Instagram, creating abstract art from the heart doesn’t mean you’ll always create something you love. This really is a journey of trial and error, and embracing the ‘error’ is how you learn to uncover your own unique style. Although the discomfort of disliking what you create is an unavoidable part of art-making, we’ll help you shift your mindset so that frustration becomes an incredibly powerful source of inspiration.
